Does Will Ferrell like Landscape Photography? (The Power of Your Network)

Does Will Ferrell like Landscape Photography?

Before we dive into today's topic, there are a few things you should know about me.

  • I watched Saturday Night Live in the late '90s and early '00s.  Best.  Cast.  Ever.
  • Zoolander was the first movie I saw after 9/11.  It felt good to laugh again.
  • Anchorman was the first movie I saw that I knew I would buy on DVD before I finished watching it in the theater.  I quote it to this day.
  • I watched Elf for the first time in the middle of summer.  It is the only Christmas movie I can watch any time of the year.
  • Our 5-year-old has developed an appreciation for building Legos.  We plan to see the new movie this weekend.

Many of you won't need me to tell you the common link among these anecdotes: Will Ferrell.

Imagine my surprise today while browsing Facebook to find that one of my good friends from college had posted a video link to her interview with Will Ferrell about his latest role!

Who do you want to know?

Name dropping aside, this got me thinking.  Without realizing it, I was just one introduction away from one of my comedic heroes.  My personal network suddenly became much larger.

Or did it?

My network didn't actually become larger.  That connection already existed - I just hadn't found it.  The question, then, moves from "Who do I know?" to "How do I connect to who I want to know?"

I've been on Facebook for eight years, but I'm only starting to grasp the true power of social media and networking.  Over the last few months, I've started to follow more photographers whose work I admire, and it never ceases to amaze me just how accessible most of them are.  Even those with tens of thousands of followers will take time to respond to a thoughtful comment or question.  In just a few weeks' time, I've had direct interaction with many people that used to seem a world away.

What if your next big break is only one or two connections away?

Does Will Ferrell like landscape photography?  I have no idea, but I know someone who could ask him.

Thanks for looking,

Adam@LiC

'The question, then, moves from "Who do I know?" to "How do I connect to who I want to know?"' -- that is great stuff. It's a little intimidating, because it removes a powerful excuse to limit your thinking and aspirations. If you can't say, "I don't have any way of connecting with the people I'd need to do that," then you can squarely confront the question of "what would I do if I could do anything?" -- whether you're comfortable doing that or not.
